Medicine Man

In 1979 “Wild Bill” initiated the Medicine Man Award.  For the next thirty-one years on the first Saturday in May at a barbeque at the Gap, a local citizen was honored with the Medicine Man Award indicating that he had made “good medicine” helping others, especially young people.

On May 2, 20011 the Bell County commissioners court passed a proclamation naming the first Saturday in May – or the very day of the annual Medicine Man – as BIll Alford day in Bell County.

Even after Bill’s death, the tradition of the Medicine Man award continues led by surviving Medicine Men and council.
